Cardiac Stenting

There are many types of heart issues and one of them is coronary heart disease. This disease is caused due to the build-up of plaque. To treat this disease, doctors use stents that open the narrowed arteries and fight with the symptoms.

Stents are tiny expandable tubes which are extensively used in treatment of the narrowing and weakening of the arteries. By using steps, patients get relief from angina and heart attack issues. Made of metal mesh, stents are inserted during the procedure called angioplasty.

What are the types of cardiac stenting?

Coronary stents are used during angioplasty to bring relief from the symptoms of the disease. There are many types of cardiac stents which are used according to the need of patients.

Let’s have a look at them:-

  • Bare-metal stent – A stent with metallic alloy. More so, it’s a vascular stent that does not have a coating, a mesh-like tube of thin wire.
  • Drug-eluting stent – Come with components of durable polymer and anti-restenotic drug. It’s a coronary stent that is inserted into coronary arteries to help in blocking of cell proliferation.
  • Bioabsorbable stent – Made from a metal with the ability to get dissolved. Such a stent is considered good for insertion into blood vessels for their ability to dissolve.
  • Dual-therapy stent – This sent is the latest one to be used in the insertion tasks. it’s value derives from its being a combination of both drug and bioengineered stent
  • Covered stent – A stent that is made of Polytetrafluroethylene successfully tackled coronary Perforations.

Sign and symptoms of cardiac stenting

There are specific heart cases when stents are used. Let’s have a look at those:-

  • To treat atherosclerosis
  • To fight with the slow build-up of thick plaques in the heart vessels
  • In cases of heart attack
  • In cases of severe chest pain (angina)

Treatment of Cardiac stenting

In most cases, the treatment of angioplasty also involves the placement of a stent in the blocked artery. The insertion of stent is done by expanding the artery with the help of an inflated balloon. The stent is taken to the blockage via artery.

The stent would stay in the artery on a permanent basis to keep it open which increases the flow of blood to the heart. Patients are kept on watch after the stent placement. In some cases, the medication follows for a long period to avoid any risk.

Patients often need to spend one day in hospital once the stent is placed. If case everything works fine, it may take a week for patient to resume to their normal work or office.
