What is Paediatric Cardiac Surgery?

Heart defects are of many kinds, some minor, others serious. In some cases, surgery is not needed on the immediate basis, while in others, it’s required on urgent basic. There are some heart defects where the surgery becomes necessary immediately after the baby is born.

What are the types of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery?

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligation- A surgery to close the opening called the ductus arteriosus. The ductus arteriosus (DA) is a blood vessel in the developing fetus.

Coarctation of the aorta repair – Done to repair a defect where a part of the aorta has a narrow section. It’s done to narrow of a part of the aorta that reaches to the heart.

Atrial septal defect (ASD) repair- A surgery to close the ASD wall. This repair is done to treat cases where the child has a “hole in the heart” since birth.

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) repair- A procedure to close the VSD. A hole in the septum, between the two lower chambers of the heart, is called a VSD.

Tetralogy of Fallot repair – To treat defects that lead to cyanosis. It’s done to repair a cardiac anomaly that involves four heart defects in children.

Truncus arteriosus repair – A surgery to treat the disorder where one trunk becomes the emergence of aorta, pulmonary artery and coronary arteries.

Tricuspid atresia repair – A surgery to treat the deforming of the tricuspid valve. The disease Tricuspid Atresia is present since birth and needs series of surgeries.

Hypoplastic left heart repair – A surgery to treat an extremely poorly developed heart. The disease is one where the heart defects are presence since birth.

Treatment of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery

There are three different ways in which a paediatric cardiac surgery is done to treat specific heart cases in children. Open-heart surgery is the norm when the doctor needs the help of a heart-lung bypass machine.

Closed-heart surgery is also done where the cut is done between the ribs. In few cases, small tunes are inserted into an artery to treat the patient.
