Cardiac Valve Replacement Surgery

A damaged or diseased heart valve does not function properly and become a cause of trouble for the body. There are many reasons that cause the heart value to become dysfunctional. Cardiac valve replacement surgery helps to treat valvular heart disease. The surgery also helps in cases when valves become leaky.

What are the types of Cardiac Valve Replacement Surgery?

There are different types of surgical options available for valve replacement.

Mechanical valve — A sturdy valve made of durable materials. This wall is considered the most enduring type that will sustain till the lifetime of the patient.

Tissue valve – A value containing donor tissue of animal or human. Such a valve would be flexible and strong, lasting some 10-20 years least likely chances of replacement.

Ross Procedure — This procedure is significant and works on the mechanism of replacement from within the patient’s body. Here, the idea is to take the healthy valve and replace with the damaged valve aortic valve.

TAVI/TAVR procedure – This procedure witnesses the repairing of the valve even without removal of the damaged valve. It’s also called Transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

There are many symptoms which lead patients towards cardiac valve replacement surgery. Let’s have a look at them:-

When chest pain is felt due to heart valve defects
When shortness of breath is felt due to heart valve defects
When fainting spells are felt due to heart valve defects
To treat cases of heart failure
When defects of heart valve severely impact the heart function
When infection damages the heart valve
When the existing heart value does not work properly
To treat cases arising out of blood clots to the heart
To treat cases arising out of infection, or bleeding

Treatment of Cardiac Valve Replacement Surgery

During the surgery, the doctor would open the chest to reach the heart and the valve. The patients are kept on anesthetic, so no pain would be felt. A heart-lung machine is used to keep up the supply of blood and circulation, as the heart would not function during those times.

Minimally invasive procedures would be used by the doctor to replace heart valves. This surgery minimizes the pain and a quick recovery is the result. A small cut is made to reach to the heart valve. Upon completion of the surgery, the cuts would be closed.

After the surgery, the patient is taken to the ICU for monitoring purposes. In case of no issues, it takes a week or so for the patients to get discharged.
